The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Infantry) James R. Wallace (ASN: 0-460012), United States Army, for gallantry in action in northern France while serving with 358th Infantry Regiment, 90th Infantry Division. On 10 July 1944 at the edge of ***, France, Lieutenant Wallace organized and personally occupied a snipers position on the roof of a farmhouse which was under continual enemy machine gun and rifle fire. By his constant presence, Lieutenant Wallace encouraged a shift of enlisted men to take turns along with him on the roof. Lieutenant Wallace, with his comrades fired the submachine gun and rifles at the enemy from this position and accounted for 15 them among whom were three officers. Lieutenant Wallace’s action set a fine example of courage and leadership for his men and is in keeping with the highest traditions of military service.
