The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Bronze Star Medal to Lieutenant Colonel (Cavalry) Samuel Mason Hogan (ASN: 0-21094), United States Army, for meritorious service while serving as Commanding Officer of a Battalion of the 33d Armored Regiment, 3d Armored Division, in support of combat operations against the enemy in Germany from 29 March 1945 to 1 April 1945. While in command of a task force in a spearhead drive from Dillenberg to Paderborn, Germany, Lieutenant Colonel Hogan led his command over difficult terrain, and in the face of enemy opposition was successful in reaching his assigned objective in a minimum amount of time and with a minimum loss of men and material. By quick thinking and rapidity of movement, his forces overcame enemy opposition and protected the left flank of the combat commands of the Division in its sweeping drive to Paderborn. Colonel Hogan was, at all times, in the lead elements of his command and through his leadership, untiring efforts, and initiative, his task force was able to contribute materially in the seizure of the Division objective. Colonel Hogan’s action during this period was of the highest order and is in keeping with the best traditions of the Armed Forces.
