    The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain (Infantry) Burrowes Goldthwaite Stevens, Jr. (ASN: 0-25950), United States Army, for gallantry in action in Northern France while serving as Commanding Officer of an Infantry Company of the 90th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in France. On 5 August 1944 at ******, France, the troops had the mission of securing a bridge. This bridge had been prepared for demolition. Lieutenant Stevens worked his platoon to a position to which it could be carried by assault and at the proper time gave the signal and personally led the assault on the bridge, which at the time was covered by small arms fire. He reduce the effectiveness of the enemy fire and charging it at a run prevented the enemy from completing the demolition, secured the bridgehead intact enabling tanks and heavy material to cross. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Captain Stevens, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
