The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Second Lieutenant (Field Artillery) Roy J. Silverblatt (ASN: 0-554708), United States Army, for gallantry in action against the enemy while serving with the 343d Field Artillery Battalion, 90th Infantry Division in action on 27 March 1945, in the vicinity of Ruppenheim, Germany. While advancing on a town, a company encountered heavy bazooka, machine gun and small arms fire from dug-in infantry positions and the company commander and a platoon leader were killed. Sensing the gravity of the situation, Second Lieutenant Silverblatt, at risk of his life, subjected himself to the intense fire, quickly reorganized the men into an efficient fighting force and led them in a successful assault on the hostile positions. His intrepid and adroit leadership inspired the company to continue its advance and capture its objective. His gallantry was in accordance with high military traditions.
