Born and raised in Amsterdam, New York, Anthony Sidoti attended Saint Mary’s High School, and then prepared for the priesthood in Rome. He then attended Niagara University in New York, and completed his undergraduate studies at Our Lady of Angels Seminary at Niagara University for Philosophy and Theology. He was ordained a Roman Catholic priest on May 18, 1940, in Immaculate Conception Cathedral in Albany, New York, and first served as associate pastor of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Parish in Groversville, New York for two years before entering military service in 1942. Commissioned a U.S. Army chaplain, he served with the 90th Infantry Division in the European Theater of Operations, earning two Silver Stars and a Purple Heart. Upon discharge he returned to the Diocese and served as an associate pastor at Saint Mary’s Parish in Frankfort for two years, then as associate pastor at Saint Anthony’s Parish in Albany from 1948 to 1963, and then as administrator, and finally as pastor until 1970. From 1970 until his retirement in 1990, he served as pastor of Saint James Parish in Albany.

    (Citation Needed) – SYNOPSIS: The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting a Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster in lieu of a Second Award of the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Chaplain’s Corps) Anthony R. Sidoti, United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving as a Chaplain with the 3d Battalion, 358th Infantry Regiment, 90th Infantry Division, during an intense mortar, machine gun, and small arms attack near Ehr, Germany, in March 1945. Learning of a seriously wounded man lying in an exposed position, Chaplain Sidoti unhesitatingly advanced through the fire, reached the casualty, and carried him to a litter squad. He then carried the dead body of another casualty to a place of cover. The men of the company, inspired by his courageous and selfless actions, reorganized themselves and completed the battalion mission successfully without further casualties. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Chaplain Sidoti, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.

    (Citation Needed) – SYNOPSIS: The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Chaplain’s Corps) Anthony R. Sidoti, United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving as a Chaplain with the 3d Battalion, 358th Infantry Regiment, 90th Infantry Division, in action in France, in November 1944. Chaplain Sidoti established an aid station in an abandoned cement factory near the Moselle River in France during an assault. Working for 36 consecutive hours, he directed and personally assisted in the evacuation of casualties from the front lines to the far side of the river. Despite constant enemy fire, he was tireless, courageous, and served as a source of inspiration to his troops. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Chaplain Sidoti, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
