Headquarters, 90th Infantry Division, General Orders No. 28 (July 24, 1944)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant [then Private] Don C. Seal (ASN: 17052935), United States Army, for gallantry in action in northern France while serving with the 358th Infantry Regiment, 90th Infantry Division. On 12 June 1944 Sergeant Seal’s squad was advancing alone through a village when heavy hostile fire from an enemy position killed the squad leader. Sergeant Seal, displaying great leadership and initiative, took charge of the squad and ordered it to withdraw while he alone engaged the enemy and attracted its fire from the remainder of the squad. After the squad had reached cover, Sergeant Seal rejoined it and led it back to his unit. Sergeant Seal’s bravery and initiative was a timely inspiration to his unit.
