The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Staff Sergeant Winifred Riggs (ASN: 35933519), United States Army, for gallantry in action against the enemy while serving with the 358th Infantry Regiment, 90th Infantry Division in action on 10 November 1944 in the vicinity of Basse Ham, France. When a squad of Company **, 358th Infantry Regiment, discovered the enemy had made a night infiltration and established two machine gun positions in a nearby house. Staff Sergeant Riggs, Squad Leader, immediately deployed the squad in a defensive formation. He then crept to the enemy-occupied building and with hand grenades destroyed the two enemy guns and crew and captured twelve prisoners. His gallantry was in accordance with military tradition.
