The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to First Lieutenant (Field Artillery) Allen T. O’Connor (ASN: 0-465107), United States Army, for extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight from 6 August 1944 to 9 August 1944, in France. First Lieutenant O’Connor performed outstanding work as liaison pilot to the 345th Field Artillery Battalion, during the advance from Mayenne to Le Mans, France. Remaining in the air almost continuously during daylight hours, he directed accurate artillery fire on the enemy opposing the advance, conducted reconnaissance to the front and flanks, and furnished liaison between adjacent columns. He flew over enemy lines on many occasions under hostile fire. His daring was an inspiration to the front line troops, and his work was a direct contribution to the speed and success of the advance. The services rendered by First Lieutenant O’Connor reflect the highest credit upon himself and the armed forces of the United States.
