The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Corporal Franklin C. Robbins (MCSN: 433097), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving with Company D, First Battalion, Twenty-fourth Marines, FOURTH Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces during the invasion of Namur Island, Kwajalein Atoll, on 1 February 1944. After valiantly leading a successful grenade and bayonet assault upon a series of connecting Japanese trenches, Corporal Robbins led and exhorted others to folly in a vigorous attack up the northern beach of Namur. When his unit was finally pinned down by hostile machine-gun fire, he stood upright with another Marine and delivered a fusillade of deadly rifle fire, killing several of the enemy and preventing the organization of a counterattack. Although severely wounded, he stayed in the fight until fresh troops arrived to reinforce his gallant unit. His courageous fighting spirit, keen initiative and heroic devotion to duty throughout this hazardous period reflect the highest credit upon Corporal Robbins and the United States Naval Service.
