The President of the United States of America, in the name of Congress, takes pleasure in presenting the Medal of Honor to Captain Edward Settle Godfrey, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism on 30 September 1877, while serving with 7th U.S. Cavalry, in action at Bear Paw Mountain, Montana. Captain Godfrey led his command into action when he was severely wounded.
