Edward Godfrey graduated from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, Class of 1867. Serving during the Indian Campaigns, he was wounded in the Nez Perce War in 1877. He retired as a U.S. Army Brigadier General.

Captain Godfrey led his command into action when he was severely wounded.
