The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Bruce H. Mills (ASN: 33149445), United States Army, for gallantry in action against the enemy while serving with the 357th Infantry Regiment, 90th Infantry Division in action on 26 October 1944 in the vicinity of Maizieres les Metz, France. During an attack on a strongly fortified enemy building, Private First Class Mills, Rifleman, in the absence of his squad leader, assumed command. By exemplary courage and intrepidity he led his squad into the enemy strongpoint. At risk of his life, he led numerous assaults on the inner rooms of the fortification and despite enemy fire of all calibers, succeeded in weakening the previously impregnable defenses. On a succeeding attack the following day, he voluntarily served as scout and again performed his duties courageously until a severe wound forced his evacuation. His gallantry was in accordance with high military traditions.
