The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Aviation Chief Machinist’s Mate Vernon Owen Hatfield, United States Navy, for extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight, for successfully rescuing a shipmate from drowning after a seaplane crash. Aviation Chief Machinist’s Mate Hatfield persevered in spite of a broken knee, numerous lacerations and contusions.
