The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Gunnery Sergeant Leo G. Trainer (MCSN: 91673), United States Marine Corps, for gallantry in action while serving with the 55th Company, Fifth Regiment (Marines), 2d Division, American Expeditionary Forces near Mouzon, France, 11 November 1918. During the march to Bellefont Farm, it was necessary to proceed parallel to a strip of woods occupied by enemy outposts armed with machine guns. Sergeant Trainer voluntarily served as a member of a patrol sent out to act as point and draw fire. They succeeded in cleaning out several outposts which resulted in the capture of the farmhouses. Later, he crossed an open field under intense machine gun fire and brought his wounded platoon leader to a place of safety.
