The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Navy Cross to Private First Class John C. Broderick (MCSN: 346064), United States Marine Corps Reserve, for extraordinary heroism and conspicuous devotion to duty while serving with Company C, SECOND Marine Raider Battalion in action against enemy Japanese forces during the landing attack of the THIRD Marine Division (Reinforced), in the Cape Torokina Area, Bougainville Island, British Solomon Islands, on 1 November 1943. Observing that a strongly fortified enemy position was retarding the advance of his platoon, Private First Class Broderick fired his weapon with grim determination, killing two Japanese ammunition carriers serving a machine gun, then fearlessly rushing forward, hurled a hand grenade into the enemy emplacement and killed several more hostile soldiers. Although suffering from wounds in the leg, he courageously assisted his comrades in destroying the machine gun, clearing the way for the advance of his platoon. Private First Class Broderick’s outstanding initiative and heroic devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
