Mitchell, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with an Infantry Company of the 23d Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces near the Bois de la Roche, France, on 26 July 1944. While leading his Infantry Company through fierce machine gun, artillery and mortar fire during the St. Lo breakthrough, Lieutenant Mitchell preceded two assault platoons and personally silenced two machine guns with shots from his own rifle, then continued to lead his men forward until they had captured 40 Germans. His extraordinary heroism, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself, the 2d Infantry Division, and the United States Army.
