The President of the United States of America, in the name of Congress, takes pleasure in presenting the Medal of Honor to Sergeant Edward P. Grimes, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism on September 29 to 5 October 1879, while serving with Company F, 5th U.S. Cavalry, in action at Milk River, Colorado. The command being almost out of ammunition and surrounded on three sides by the enemy, Sergeant Grimes voluntarily brought up a supply under heavy fire at almost point blank range.
