The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Navy and Marine Corps Medal to Lieutenant Kenneth Francis Beckman (NSN: 0-97997), United States Naval Reserve, for heroism in the performance of volunteer services in a United States Submarine. While conducting operations against the enemy in dangerous waters, a serious torpedo fire started in the after torpedo room. Lieutenant Beckman with two volunteers entered the room several times, but to no avail. Despite the aid of rescue breathing apparatus, all three members of the party were nearly overcome by the dense smoke. As the intense heat was approaching the torpedo warhead and placing his ship in grave danger, he again led his party into the heat, suffocating smoke, and darkness. With complete disregard for his personal safety, and after considerable effort, he succeeded in preparing the burning torpedo for firing, loading it into the tube and releasing it. These heroic actions undoubtedly saved his ship from complete destruction. His conduct throughout was an inspiration to the officers and men in his ship and was in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
