By direction of the President, under the provisions of the act of Congress approved July 9, 1918 (Bul. No. 43, W.D., 1918), Private William R. Hughes (MCSN: 154366), United States Marine Corps, is cited by the Commanding General, Second Division, American Expeditionary Forces for passing through and in rear of the German Front line to bring up ammunition to his machine gun on 6 June 1918, to cut off the retreat of a German machine gun crew of three men and enable the Marines to capture the gun while serving with the 6th Machine-Gun Battalion near Chateau-Thierry, France.
