By direction of the President, under the provisions of the act of Congress approved July 9, 1918 (Bul. No. 43, W.D., 1918), First Lieutenant Hamilton M. H. Fleming (MCSN: 0-298), United States Marine Corps, is cited by the Commanding General, American Expeditionary Forces, for gallantry in action and a silver star may be placed upon the ribbon of the Victory Medals awarded him. First Lieutenant Fleming distinguished himself by gallantry in action while serving with 66th Company, Fifth Regiment (Marines), 2d Division, American Expeditionary Forces at the crossing of the Meuse River, 10 – 11 November 1918. His company having crossed the river encountered heavy enemy machine gun fire from a nearby woods; Lieutenant Fleming, with great coolness and without regard to his own safety, led the few remaining men of his platoon into the enemy lines and successfully covered the exposed flank of his company until the company could move to a more advantageous position. Upon its departure, although left with only six men, in the darkness and surrounded by the enemy, he continued to repulse them, thus saving the lives of many of the men of his company.
