The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Navy Distinguished Service Medal to Lieutenant General Robert Everton Cushman, Jr. (MCSN: 0-5062), United States Marine Corps, for exceptionally meritorious and distinguished service in a position of great responsibility to the Government of the United States as Deputy Commanding General, III Marine Amphibious Force from April to May 1967, and as Commanding General, III Marine Amphibious Force; Senior Advisor, I Corps, Republic of Vietnam; and as I Corps Coordinator during operations against an enemy aggressor force in Vietnam from June to December 1967. During this period, Lieutenant General Cushman, with incomparable professional skill and determination, directed his forces against the communist insurgents and North Vietnamese army forces. Fully recognizing the problems posed by a tenacious and unscrupulous enemy in the field, Lieutenant General Cushman brought innovative and positive leadership to the conduct of the war which, tempered by his originality and thoughtful understanding of human values, fundamentally assisted the Republic of Vietnam in countering the communist threat to their security and freedom. By his courageous devotion to duty, Lieutenant General Cushman rendered valuable and distinguished service and contributed greatly to the success of friendly forces engaged in the Vietnamese campaign, thereby upholding the highest traditions of the United States Marine Corps.
