The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Chief Torpedoman William Horace Beck (NSN: 3808879), United States Navy, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action in the U.S.S. SKATE (SS-305), during a War Patrol of that Submarine during World War II. As Chief of the Boat, his industry, skill and able supervision in maintaining a high state of readiness in the control room at all times were of invaluable assistance to his Commanding Officer in rescuing six downed aviators under extremely hazardous conditions during which this submarine was strafed twice, bombed three times, and fired on by shore batteries three times. His coolness and high devotion to duty contributed directly to the success of his vessel in evading severe enemy countermeasures. His conduct throughout was an inspiration to all with whom he served, and was in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.

The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Navy and Marine Corps Medal to Chief Torpedoman William Horace Beck (NSN: 3808879), United States Navy, for meritorious conduct and outstanding performance of duty in the U.S.S. SALMON (SS-182) during four War Patrols of that Submarine in enemy controlled waters which resulted in the sinking of one enemy cruiser and one destroyer and seriously damaging another enemy cruiser with two torpedo hits. As Torpedoman’s Mate in charge of the after torpedo room and by his thorough knowledge of his duties he contributed in a large measure to the success of his submarine in inflicting damage on the enemy. His conduct throughout these patrols was in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
