Headquarters, 90th Infantry Division, General Orders No. 28 (July 24, 1944), Amended by General Orders No. 33 (1944)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Robert R. Martee (ASN: 0-1305280), United States Army, for gallantry in northern France while serving with the 359th Infantry Regiment, 90th Infantry Division. On 14 June 1944, Lieutenant Martee a machine gun platoon leader lost one gun and the crew of another in an intense artillery and mortar concentration preceding an enemy counterattack. With utter disregard for heavy enemy fire, Lieutenant Martee himself manned the crewless gun in its un-emplaced position and contributed to a major degree the firepower necessary to break the counterattack. Practically at the moment the counterattack was broken, Lieutenant Martee was killed while still manning the gun. By his gallantry, Lieutenant Martee upheld the highest traditions of the military service and his courageous act was a timely inspiration to his entire battalion.
