The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Carl Lewis (ASN: 14134704), United States Army, for gallantry in action against the enemy while serving with the 358th Infantry Regiment, 90th Infantry Division in action on 24 November 1944, in the vicinity of Butzdorf, Germany. During an advance on enemy pillboxes, Private First Class Lewis, Automatic Rifleman, killed fifteen of the enemy and cut off a vital enemy communication trench. Alone, at the risk of his life, he advanced through heavy small arms fire to destroy an enemy fort, kill at least two more of the enemy and capture sixteen. His gallantry was in accordance with the highest military tradition.
