The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Field Artillery), [then Second Lieutenant] Charles A. Leet (ASN: 0-1184093), United States Army, for gallantry in action against the enemy while serving with the 343d Field Artillery Battalion, 90th Infantry Division in action from 8 to 15 December 1944, in the vicinity of Dillingen, Germany. During the Saar River operation, First Lieutenant Leet advanced through devastating fire of various calibers and established successive artillery observation posts in proximity to the enemy. Often times having to combat infiltrating hostile troops with small arms fire, he remained at his post throughout constant artillery and mortar barrages and registered such accurate concentrations upon enemy positions that nine counterattacks were repelled. His gallant actions accelerated the advance of friendly infantrymen and were in accordance with high military traditions.
