The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant Robert T. Hill (ASN: 33503107), United States Army, for gallantry in action against the enemy while serving with the 357th Infantry Regiment, 90th Infantry Division in action on 26 October 1944 in the vicinity of Maizieres les Metz, France. After unsuccessful attempts were made to blow a hole in a portion of a large enemy fortified position, Sergeant Hill, voluntarily and at risk of his life, made his way through intense direct enemy fire, placed a demolition charge against the strong point and ignited the charge. He gained an entrance and exploded booby-traps and land mines to clear a path for the assault troops. Though bleeding profusely from wounds, he insisted on leading the assault into the strong point and took six prisoners. Sergeant Hill accepted evacuation to the rear for medical attention only when allowed to go as a guard for the prisoners. His gallantry was in accordance with high military traditions.
