The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918 (amended by act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant Robert W. Hehemann, United States Air Force, for gallantry in connection with military operations against an armed enemy of the United States while serving as Pilot of an F-15C aircraft of the 53d Tactical Fighter Squadron, 36th Tactical Fighter Wing, in action over Baghdad, Iraq, on 6 February 1991. On that date, Lieutenant Hehemann’s mission was to gain and maintain air superiority deep in Iraqi airspace. While manning critical combat air patrol position, Lieutenant Hehemann was advised of a group of aircraft heading east toward Iran. Lieutenant Hehemann’s flight immediately initiated an intercept course towards the unidentified aircraft. Disregarding personal safety, they deliberately exposed themselves to known surface-to-air missile and anti-aircraft artillery sites while completing the attack. After visually confirming the targets were Iraqi fighters, Lieutenant Hehemann quickly fired his weapons. The enemy successfully evaded Lieutenant Hehemann’s first two shots. His next shot found its mark, downing one enemy jet. He quickly followed with a second shot downing another jet. By his gallantry and devotion to duty, Lieutenant Hehemann has reflected great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.
