The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Technical Sergeant Harold C. Heggerness (ASN: 37169728), United States Army, for gallantry in action in northern France while serving with the 90th Infantry Division. On 12 June 1944, Sergeant Heggerness’ company, assaulting enemy positions, came under heavy machine-gun and sniper fire. One of the corporals of his platoon fell wounded. Sergeant Heggerness, without thought of his own personal safety, crawled approximately 100 yards under enemy fire to the other soldier and brought him to cover where he could be evacuated by medical aid men.
