The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Thomas J. Grosse (ASN: 35601887), United States Army, for gallantry in action against the enemy while serving with the 90th Infantry Division in Northern France. On 17 August 1944 in the vicinity of ****, France, when his company had forced their way into a town and were receiving machine gun fire from a hidden machine gun position, Private First Class Grosse worked himself to a position where he discovered the enemy changing the location of the gun. An exchange of hand grenades resulted in two of the enemy being wounded. He then killed a third man in the enemy gun crew with his rifle and wounded a fourth preventing the enemy from moving their machine gun to a position which was enfilading the friendly force. His gallant act was in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service.
