The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Lieutenant Colonel (Infantry) Donald G. Gorton (ASN: 0-268295), United States Army, for gallantry in action in northern France while serving with the 359th Infantry Regiment, 90th Infantry Division. During the period 3 – 8 July 1944 Lieutenant Colonel Gordon’s battalion was ordered to move forward and attack the high ground near ***, France. He immediately received a counterattack by the enemy, supported by tanks. Lieutenant Colonel Gorton immediately went forward exposing himself to enemy small arms and machine gun fire, encouraging his men by personal example to maintain their position. On 5 July 1944 the battalion was again attacked by infantry and tanks. Lieutenant Colonel Gorton again by personal leadership moved from place to place along the lines, encouraged the men told their position and during the night stayed with his men in the position. He went from unit to unit, reorganizing them for a continuation of the attack the following morning, making it possible to take the high ground in and around *** and accomplishing the mission of the battalion. By taking the assigned objective through his gallant action, Lieutenant Colonel Gorton was a fine example to his men, showing outstanding leadership, courage and determination. His action is in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service.
