The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Staff Sergeant Edward L. Gill (ASN: 33017597), United States Army, for gallantry in action against the enemy while serving with the ** Tank Destroyer Battalion, 90th Infantry Division in Northern France. On 18 August 1944 in the vicinity of ****, France, Sergeant Gill’s company encountered a force of approximately 100 enemy troops in a town, who immediately opened fire. An accompanying armored car was immediately disabled but notwithstanding this fact Sergeant Gill ordered his armored car to by-pass the first and charge the enemy troops. While under small arms fire from the enemy position in the town, and disregarding his own personal safety, Sergeant Gill stood up in the ring mount unprotected and manned the machine gun as the armored car advanced. This resulted in three of the enemy being killed, seven wounded, thirty captured and the remainder being dispersed. This gallant action on the part of Sergeant Gill was in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service.
