The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Staff Sergeant [then Private First Class] Martin Garcia (ASN: 38120190), United States Army, for gallantry in action in northern France while serving with the 359th Infantry Regiment, 90th Infantry Division. On 18 June 1944, Sergeant Garcia, a leading scout, was wounded in the hand by a nearby machine gun. In spite of his wound and the great odds against him, Sergeant Garcia alone attacked the machine gun, killing one of the enemy machine gunners and capturing the remaining two. His tenacity of purpose was a decided inspiration to all members of his unit.
