The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Staff Sergeant Alvin Crawford Hinson (ASN: 14510735), United States Army, for gallantry in action in connection with military operations involving conflict with an armed hostile force in the Republic of Vietnam. Sergeant Hinson distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous actions on 12 May 1969 while serving as a Scout Platoon Sergeant with Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 2d Battalion, 47th Infantry Regiment, 9th Infantry Division, on a reconnaissance in force mission in Long An Province. As his platoon moved through unsecured territory, it came under intense hostile fire, sustained several serious casualties, and became pinned down. Seeing that the wounded personnel were without aid, Sergeant Hinson, with complete disregard for his own safety, courageously moved through the hail of rounds, across 100 meters of open terrain to aid the injured soldiers. While giving aid to one of his men Sergeant Hinson was fatally wounded. Sergeant Hinson’s extraordinary heroism in close combat with an armed hostile force was in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflects great credit upon himself, the 9th Infantry Division, and the United States Army.
