The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting Distinguished Flying Cross to Senior Master Sergeant Terry K. Kerr, United States Air Force, for heroism while participating in aerial flight as Boom Operator over the Gulf of Arabia in Operation DESERT STORM on 13 February 1991. On that date, while flying as Boom Operator on a KC-135 Aircraft, Sergeant Kerr’s aircraft experienced an explosion in the galley area of the fuselage. The explosion knocked him to the deck. The ensuing fire engulfed the aircraft in heavy suffocating smoke causing him to suffer first and second degree burns on the face and scalp and burned away over twenty-five percent of his hair. Sergeant Kerr had the presence of mind to run to the cockpit and don emergency oxygen equipment. After acquiring a fire extinguisher, he reentered the galley region, which by now was a raging fire, and extinguished the flames. His quick thinking and heroic reaction were directly responsible for saving the lives of his crew and allowing the safe recovery of the aircraft. The outstanding heroism and selfless devotion to duty displayed by Sergeant Kerr reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.
