The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Second Lieutenant (Field Artillery) Culver D. Field, Jr. (ASN: 0-1180892), United States Army, for gallantry in action in northern France while serving with the 344th Field Artillery Battalion, 90th Infantry Division. On 6 July 1944 Lieutenant Field, an Artillery Observer, was severely wounded by mortar fire. Although suffering severely, Lieutenant field refused to be evacuated and after receiving only first aid, he continued to direct fire and later moved his O. P. 350 yards for better observation. By his tenacity of purpose and refusing to be evacuated until the enemy fire had been silenced three hours later, Lieutenant field clearly upheld the highest traditions of the military service.
