Headquarters, 90th Infantry Division, General Orders No. 213 (December 16, 1944)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Captain (Infantry) Jack M. Deming (ASN: 0-1283733), United States Army, for gallantry in action against the enemy while serving with the 358th Infantry Regiment, 90th Infantry Division in action on 11 November 1944 in the vicinity of Koenigamacher, France. A platoon of Company **, 358th Infantry Regiment, suffered heavy casualties, including the Platoon Leader, Sergeant, and Guide. Captain Deming, Company Commander, regrouped the platoon, organized a demolition party and chose to lead it himself on a mission to destroy an enemy armored observation post. At risk of his life, Captain Deming led the group to their objective, assisted in placing the explosive charge, but was mortally wounded by an enemy rifleman while attempting to take cover from the demolition blast. Captain Deming’s courageous leadership greatly bolstered the morale of the depleted platoon at a most critical time. His gallantry was in accordance with high military tradition.
