The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain Thomas Nicholas Dietz, United States Air Force, for gallantry in connection with military operations against an armed enemy of the unites states while serving as Pilot of an F-15C Fighter Airplane of the 53d Fighter Squadron, 36th Tactical Fighter Wing, in action near Baghdad, Iraq, on 6 February 1991. On that date, Captain Dietz’ mission was to gain and maintain air superiority deep in Iraqi airspace. While manning a critical combat air patrol position, Captain Dietz was advised of a group of aircraft heading east towards the unidentified aircraft. Disregarding personal safety, they deliberately exposed themselves to known surface-to-air missile and anti-aircraft artillery sites while completing the attack. After visually confirming the targets were Iraqi fighters, Captain Dietz quickly fired his weapons. The enemy successfully evaded Captain Dietz’ first two shots. His next shot found its mark, downing one enemy jet. He quickly followed with a second shot downing another jet. By his gallantry and devotion to duty, Captain Dietz has reflected great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.
