The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Driver John Shannon (T/10693500), British Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 2d Field Ambulance, Royal Army Service Corps, in action at Anzio Beachhead from 30 January to 10 February 1944. During this period Driver Shannon was an outstanding example of dauntless courage and utmost devotion to duty as he repeatedly undertook every dangerous task involved in the evacuation of battle casualties. On the night of 2 – 3 February, when the Gordon Highlanders were being subjected to particularly intense enemy shellfire, he calmly and efficiently, without any regard for his own safety, collected wounded personnel and transported them over fire-swept roads to the advanced dressing station. Throughout these operations Driver Shannon displayed sound judgment, superior resourcefulness and such conspicuous bravery that he inspired all who witnessed his actions.
