The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Colonel (Infantry) John Allen Hemphill (ASN: 0-64015), United States Army, for gallantry in action while engaged in military operations involving conflict with an armed hostile force in the Republic of Vietnam. Colonel Hemphill distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous actions during combat operations near My Phuoc Tay, South Vietnam, while serving as Commanding Officer of the 3d Brigade, 9th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy from 4 to 6 October 1968. Throughout the two-day battle with a large enemy force, Colonel Hemphill repeatedly exposed himself to enemy fire to direct his men. His helicopter was hit several times as he directed his pilot to make low passes over the enemy positions. Through his efforts 139 enemy soldiers were killed, and 17 were captured along with more than 160 weapons and numerous other supplies. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Colonel Hemphill, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
