The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Corporal William N. Ollerenshaw (Personal No. 14425142), British Army, for gallantry in action as a member of the 79th Armored Division (British Army), attached to the U.S. Army 84th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in Germany, on 22 November 1944. As commander of a tank in a group supporting the infantry in an attack on seven pillboxes, three of which had been silenced, Corporal Ollerenshaw, disregarding his own safety, dismounted from his tank in the face of heavy enemy machine gun fire and assisted in freeing his troop commander’s tank which had bogged down in heavy mud. His actions enabled the attack to continue which resulted in the destruction of the remaining enemy pillboxes. The personal bravery and bold, rapid action on the part of Corporal Ollerenshaw reflect great credit upon himself and the military services to which he belongs.
