The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant Thomas McLaughlin (ASN: 6070101), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Headquarters, 3d Battalion, 18th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in North Africa in 1943. After completing his own mission in an encounter with the enemy, Sergeant McLaughlin, choosing not to retire to a place of safety, assumed control of a group of riflemen withdrawing under heavy enemy machine gun fire. His skillful deployment and courageous leadership under adverse conditions prevented serious casualties. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
