The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Floyd I. Chambliss, Jr. (ASN: 0-1321291), United States Army, for gallantry in action against the enemy while serving with the 358th Infantry Regiment, 90th Infantry Division in Northern France. On 17 July 1944 near ****, France, while commanding a mortar platoon supporting an infantry advance which came under heavy fire and was pinned to the ground, Lieutenant Chambliss ran through enemy fire to direct the fire of the mortar platoon. Although wounded he continued to encourage and direct his platoon in such a manner that the enemy fire was neutralized and the supporting infantry was able to reach its position. Despite his wounds, he continued on his mission until it was completed. His gallant action was an inspiration to his men and in keeping withy the highest military traditions.
