The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Corporal Pruitt B. Carr (ASN: 18071182), United States Army, for gallantry in action against the enemy while serving with the 358th Infantry Regiment, 90th Infantry Division in action on 9 November 1944 in the vicinity of Basse Ham, France. During street fighting in the town, an Intelligence and Reconnaissance Platoon, engaged in patrol activity, encountered intense enemy machine gun cross fire which wounded one member of the patrol and forced the others to take cover. Corporal Carr, Squad Leader and Acting Platoon Sergeant, voluntarily and at risk of his life, moved to the center of the street, which was subjected to intense enemy automatic weapons fire, and carried the wounded comrade over 60 yards of open ground to the safety of a building. There he administered first aid. He then charged the enemy gun with a bazooka in an attempt to destroy it. Although Corporal Carr was fatally wounded in this action, the fearless courage with which he attacked the enemy emplacement diverted their attention toward himself and enabled a comrade, advancing from another direction, to destroy it with bazooka fire. His gallantry was in accordance with high military traditions.
