The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Technical Sergeant [then Sergeant] Frank M. Burford (ASN: 33446445), United States Army, for gallantry in action in northern France while serving with the 90th Infantry Division. On 14 June 1944 in the vicinity of ** , France, Sergeant Burford led a small group against machine gun positions of an enemy strong point. This group led by Sergeant Burford knocked out two machine gun and placements, killing four of the enemy. Then they routed another enemy group and later killed two more and were proceeding on to continue the attack until ordered by the Italian commander to move to another position. The gallantry in action displayed by Sergeant Burford resulted in the rapid advance of his troops and was an inspiration to his comrades and in keeping with the best traditions of the service.
