The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain (Field Artillery) Michael K. Walters, United States Army, for gallantry in action in connection with military operations involving conflict with an armed hostile force while serving with the 57th Aviation Company (Assault Helicopter), 1st Aviation Brigade, in the Republic of Vietnam on 12 November 1969. Captain Walters distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous actions while serving as aircraft commander of a helicopter supporting Allied operations. All of the aircraft in his flight were preparing for a mission when they came under an intensive enemy mortar attack. The first round impacted, wounding several pilots including Captain Walters. Despite his own wounds he ran to assist a seriously wounded soldier. Captain Walters, along with a crew member of one of the aircraft, began carrying the wounded to a ship that was preparing to perform the medevac. When an enemy mortar scored a direct hit on the helicopter, he then ran to assist the unconscious pilot from the demolished ship. With the increasing number of casualties, Captain Walters ran to a less seriously damaged aircraft to perform the medevac himself. When all of the wounded were aboard, he took off through intense hostile fire for a hospital at Pleiku. The medevac was a success and the lives of several soldiers were saved. Captain Walters’ outstanding flying ability and devotion to duty were exemplary. His actions were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
