The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Second Lieutenant (Corps of Engineers) James L. Adams (ASN: 0-887353), United States Army, for gallantry in action against the enemy while serving with the 315th Engineer Combat Battalion, 90th Infantry Division in action on 9 November 1944 in the vicinity of Malling, France. While on reconnaissance in advance of a platoon of the 315th Engineer Combat Battalion, which was engaged in a mine sweeping assignment, Second Lieutenant Adams, Platoon Leader, was fired upon from an enemy strongpoint. Fully cognizant of the imminent danger, he quickly reorganized the platoon into an assault force and, without regard for his personal safety, led it in an attack on the enemy position until mortally wounded. The courageous and aggressive leadership displayed by Second Lieutenant Adams was a contributing factor to the successful accomplishment of the assault force’s mission. His gallantry was in accordance with high military traditions.
