The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant Clarence G. Wright (ASN: 20837904), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company B, 1st Battalion, 157th Infantry Regiment, 45th Infantry Division, inaction near Venafro, Italy, on 22 December 1943. Sergeant Wright was in charge of a heavy machine gun section supporting a rifle company when he received word that the section leader of another machine gun section had been killed in the course of an enemy counter-attack. Sergeant Wright put his own guns in action and crawled forward under heavy enemy fire to advance forward of the section whose leader had been killed. He reorganized the section and got its guns into action. The fire of the machine gun section covered the reorganization of the rifle company which then attacked to take its objective. Sergeant Wright’s courage and leadership reflect the highest credit on the Armed Forces.
