Headquarters, 45th Infantry Division, General Orders No. 59 (March 27, 1944)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Clyde W. Werner (ASN: 20837536), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Headquarters Company, 3d Battalion, 157th Infantry Regiment, 45th Infantry Division, in action from 7 to 8 February 1944, near Carroceto, Italy. During this period enemy artillery fire repeatedly interrupted telephone communications. Private First Class Werner laid and spliced many lines during the night 7 – 8 February in areas frequently under enemy artillery fire and in front line areas in which enemy patrols were extremely active. Through his efforts wire communications were established which were of inestimable value in enabling the battalion to withstand the enemy counter-attack. Private First Class Werner’s courage and devotion to duty are in the best traditions of the military service.
