The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting a Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster in lieu of a Second Award of the Silver Star to Lieutenant Colonel (Infantry) Harry Ainsworth Clark, Jr. (ASN: 0-33937), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Headquarters Company, 3d Battalion, 9th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 1 March 1953 in the vicinity of Um-Dong, North Korea. On that date, at approximately 2130 hours, the enemy unleashed a barrage of artillery and mortar fire and, utilizing a numerically superior ground force, succeeded in overrunning positions of Company E. Putting a pre-conceived counterattack into effect, Colonel Clark guided friendly troops through heavy enemy shelling to the battle site. Exposing himself to the deadly enemy fire, Colonel Clark, with complete disregard for personal safety, remained with the most advanced elements, directing the fire of his men and giving them words of encouragement. At one crucial point in the conflict he unhesitatingly entered a burning bunker to remove a wounded man to safety. As a direct result of his courageous leadership, the friendly forces were successful in repelling the enemy force. The outstanding gallantry in action displayed by Colonel Clark reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
