The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private William W. Webb, Jr., United States Army, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action against the enemy while serving with the 45th Infantry Division in Italy, during World War II. Private Webb stayed at his machine gun post after his supporting riflemen had retired due to lack of ammunition and his platoon leader and section sergeant had become casualties. He kept firing and held his flank position until his line was reformed and the enemy repulsed. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
