The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain (Infantry) John R. Turnbull, United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 45th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on the Anzio Beachhead in May 1944. During the allied offensive to break the ring of enemy defenses around the beachhead, Captain Turnbull coordinated the heavy weapons of his battalion for effective support of the attacking rifle companies. Under heavy fire he selected positions for his weapons and supervised their replacement for the attack. On numerous occasions Captain Turnbull moved through intense small-arms and artillery fire to encourage his men and direct them in their continued close support of the assault troops. Captain Turnbull’s courage and leadership reflect the highest traditions of the Army of the United States.
